Biotic vs abiotic controls on temporal sensitivity of primary production to precipitation across North American drylands

چکیده

Dryland net primary productivity (NPP) is sensitive to temporal variation in precipitation (PPT), but the magnitude of this ‘temporal sensitivity’ varies spatially. Hypotheses for spatial sensitivity have often emphasized abiotic factors, such as moisture limitation, while overlooking biotic vegetation structure. We tested these hypotheses using spatiotemporal models fit remote-sensing data sets assess how structure and climate influence across five dryland ecoregions western USA. Temporal was higher locations dominated by herbaceous vegetation. By contrast, much less explained mean annual PPT. In fact, ecoregion-specific showed inconsistent associations PPT; whereas decreased with increasing PPT most ecoregions, it increased arid ecoregion, hot deserts. The strong, positive on indicates that herbaceous-dominated drylands will be particularly future increases variability dramatic changes cover type caused invasions or shrub encroachment lead NPP dynamics, perhaps independent precipitation.

Temporal patterns of diversity: assessing the biotic and abiotic controls on ant assemblages

In this study, we use 12 months of data from 11 ant assemblages to test whether seasonal variation in ant diversity is governed by either the structuring influences of interspecific competition or environmental conditions. Because the importance of competition might vary along environmental gradients, we also test whether the signature of competition depends on elevation. We find little evidenc...

Tritrophic Interactions Across Biotic and Abiotic Gradients

Responses to previous reviews This LTREB proposal was submitted in January, 2008 and was not funded. The reviewer and panel comments were very helpful in drafting a revision and in contemplating the long-term research goals of the PI. All reviewer comments prompted changes in this proposal; the most notable concerns and criticisms (italicized and shortened) from the panel summary are directly a...

Improvement of lignans production in hairy root culture of Linum mucronatum using abiotic and biotic elicitors .

Elicitors could be used as the enhancer of plant secondary-metabolite synthesis and could play an important role in biosynthetic pathways of important medicinal compounds. The present study investigated the effect of abiotic elicitor (fungal extract of Fusarium graminearum) and two abiotic elicitors (methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid) at different concentrations in 18- and 30-day-old cultures...

Categorical representation of North American precipitation projections

We explore use of the familiar tercile framework of seasonal forecasting for the characterization of 21st-century precipitation projections over North America. Consistent with direct analyses of modeled precipitation change, in a superensemble of CMIP5 simulations an unambiguous pattern of shifted tercile population statistics develops as the globe warms. Expressed categorically, frequencies fo...

Biotic and abiotic effects on CO2 sequestration during microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

In this study, CO2 sequestration was investigated through the microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process with isolates obtained from a cave called 'Cave Without A Name' (Boerne, TX, USA) and the Pamukkale travertines (Denizli, Turkey). The majority of the bacterial isolates obtained from these habitats belonged to the genera Sporosarcina, Brevundimonas, Sphingobacterium ...
